    Step 1: Measure Your Rooms

    Step 2: Calculate Wall Area

    Multiply the perimeter of each room by the wall height to get the total wall area for that room.

    Example Room 1: 52 ft (perimeter) x 8 ft (height) = 416 sq ft.

    Example Room 2: 44 ft x 8 ft = 352 sq ft.

    Example Room 3: 40 ft x 8 ft = 320 sq ft.

    Total Wall Area (3 rooms): 416 + 352 + 320 = 1088 sq ft.

    Step 3: Subtract Doors and Windows

    Estimate the area of doors and windows you won't be painting. A standard door is about 21 sq ft, and a standard window is about 15 sq ft. Subtract this from your total wall area.

    Let's assume 3 doors and 4 windows across the 3 rooms: (3 x 21) + (4 x 15) = 63 + 60 = 123 sq ft.

    Paintable Wall Area: 1088 sq ft - 123 sq ft = 965 sq ft.

    Step 4: Account for Coats and Paint Coverage

    Most paint covers about 350-400 sq ft per gallon per coat. Check the specific coverage on your paint can. Most projects require two coats for best results.

    Total Area to Cover (2 coats): 965 sq ft x 2 = 1930 sq ft.

    Gallons Needed: 1930 sq ft / 375 sq ft/gallon (average) ≈ 5.15 gallons.

    Conclusion

    For a typical 3-bedroom house (painting only the bedrooms), you'll likely need around 5 to 6 gallons of paint for two coats. It's always wise to buy slightly more than you calculate to account for touch-ups or variations in coverage.
